3 Years of Rocksteady Boxing
Today, we celebrated our 3rd Anniversary of our Rocksteady Boxing Program at Core. Rocksteady Boxing is a program for people with Parkinson's Disease that gives them hope by improving their quality of life through a non-contact boxing based fitness curriculum. The goal of the program is to help slow the progression of PD through exercise.Parkinson's can affect the motor skills, speech, balance, cognitive abilities, and more in each individual person. One of the most common effects of the disease is tremors in the hands or legs. We started our program in April of 2016 with the goal of helping those with PD find a way to exercise. This month in Jiu-Jitsu, Core's youth was represented by Kaden Collins (Gold), CJ Collins (Silver), Zane Mccoy (Silver), Hunter Mohs (Bronze), Patrick Graboviy(Gold), Isaac Estrada (Gold), Kane Ladegast (Gold), Blakely Touche (Bronze), and Ryker Peacock (Bronze) at the Midwest Nationals on April 20th. Adult Jiu-Jitsu was represented by Jacob Hall (Double Gold), Beau Gadegard (Bronze), Joey Davis, Alex Chism (Silver), Quinten Howell (Gold), and Luke Powrie (Silver) at Midwest Nationals. Jiu-Jitsu is Important in All Self Defense
Lately, my newsfeed has been inundated with videos of various instructors talking about fighting with a knife. Specifically, fighting on the ground with a knife. They talk about what happens when the knife is introduced and how it changes the fight. In one video, an instructor makes a claim that basically says 'Your Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu does not matter when a knife is involved.' It is true that a knife, a gun, a brick, or anything that can be used as a weapon, when brought into a fight, is very dangerous. However, to say that Jiu-Jitsu does not work when a weapon is involved is wrong. What Jiu-Jitsu does better than most martial arts is it allows you to apply techniques that you have ....

The Competition Team - December 2018
This month, CORE was represented on a local, state, and world scale in Boxing, Muay Thai, and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. In Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, CORE had athletes compete in the 2018 IBJJF No Gi World Championships. Nathan Haddad and Erick "Thor" Hastings both won the Bronze medal for their divisions. Haddad competed in the Purple Belt Medium Heavy Weight Division and Hastings competed in the Blue Belt Ultra Heavy Weight Division. Hastings also won the Silver medal in the Open Weight Division. Michelle Day (Blue Belt) and Alvin "The Kid" Robinson (Black Belt) also competed. One thing that makes us the most vulnerable is our search for someone or something, besides ourselves, to provide “safety”. Obviously, we should expect our society to provide a measure of civility and security. The problem arises when we are lulled into a false sense of security and think that someone or something is going to protect us. The Competition Team - October 2018
This month, on October 6th, Erick "Thor" Hastings and Gabriel "Hollywood" Shepherd both won their amateur Boxing matches by decision at Ced's Boxing Club. On October 13th, Jongin Choi and Oscar Fernandez both won their amateur matches by decision. Our Youth Jiu Jitsu team celebrated many wins at Midwest Nationals on Saturday, October 27th. Gold medals were won across multiple divisions by Cayden and Cj Collins, Will Hibbs, and Kane Ladegast, while Ryker Peacock and Hayven Lantz both won silver medals in their division, and James Tangle and Story Addison won the bronze medal in their divisions. The Competition Team - September 2018
This month, Core had athletes competing both locally and nationally in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and MMA. On September 15th, Justin and Nick Bobrow both won their amateur MMA debuts. Justin beat his opponent with a guillotine choke in the first round, while Nick took a second round victory by TKO via ground and pound. Justin fought in the 145lb weight division and Nick fought in the 155lb weight division. In BJJ, Nathan Haddad and Erick "Thor" Hastings both competed at the IBJJF No Gi Pan Am Championships on September 16th. Erick brought home the gold medal in the Ultra Heavyweight division. Nathan brought home the bronze medal in the Middle Heavyweight division. ....

Last August, Core had many of our athletes compete in high level tournaments and matches for Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Boxing, and MMA. For Jiu Jitsu, Core was represented by Erick “Thor” Hastings, Nathan Haddad, Max Haddad, Michelle Day, and Braxton Briscoe at the 2018 IBJJF Las Vegas Open. Erick won the gold medal in the No Gi Blue Belt Super Heavyweight division, beating all opponents by kimura submission. Nathan placed in multiple divisions, winning the silver medal in both the Gi and No Gi Purple Belt Middle Heavyweight divisions, as well as the bronze medal in the Gi Purple Belt Open weight division.
