Rolando Haddad, founder of Core Combat Sports, is also a Krav Maga black belt, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt, and successful MMA, grappling and kickboxing competitor. He has been teaching combat sports since 2001 and currently teaches beginning and advanced Krav Maga classes at Core.
Rolando pioneered Krav Maga in the region in 2002, making Core the only true self-defense facility in Louisville. All of Core’s Krav Maga instructors are required to go through national grading and to have proven themselves as extremely adept students of Krav Maga.
Helio Soneca is a 6th Dan Black Belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and has won numerous world championships, including the first world championship in the sport. In 2017, he won the UAEJJF BJJ Legends World Title. Soneca has been training in the sport for 40 years and is one of the founders of Gracie Barra, currently the best BJJ in the world. In his 30 years teaching the sport, Soneca has trained names like Vanderlei Silva, Alan Belcher, and Michel Safi. He currently teaches Core’s adult and kids BJJ classes.
Abdul Jarvis is a top-level boxing coach and has coached boxing and kickboxing for more than 20 years, developing 5 Golden Gloves champions and 2 world champions. Abdul currently teaches adult (beginner and advanced) and kids boxing classes, as well as Rock Steady, a class designed specifically for people with Parkinson’s disease.
Abdul started boxing and kickboxing at 9 years old, competing in 30 amateur matches and winning the Golden Gloves in 1978. Abdul suffered a major setback in 1985 when he was hospitalized for one year after being run over by a truck. After rehab, he turned professional; compiling a boxing record of 11 wins to 1 loss and a kickboxing record of 22-0, winning the World Kickboxing Championship.
Brent Weedman has been training in martial arts since he was 3 years old, beginning with full contact karate. He has also trained in Judo, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Muay Thai, and MMA, and has achieved his black belt in Judo and BJJ.
In 2003, Brent won the Byakuren All Japan Open full contact karate tournament in Osaka, Japan, becoming the youngest person to ever capture the title and the only non Japanese to ever place in the top 3. Later, Brent competed in the Bellator Fighting Championships, retiring in 2014 with a record of 24-9-1. He still occasionally competes in local and regional BJJ tournaments. Brent teaches some of the adult BJJ class times at Core (and previously also taught Muay Thai). He is also currently training to be a firefighter.
Robert Dietz is a Black Belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu who began training in 1998 with a Rickson Gracie affiliate and later a Pedro Saur affiliate. He has been one of the adult BJJ instructors at Core since 2004.
Jim Harrison is a 3rd degree Black Belt in Judo under the United States Judo Association. He is a 3-time Kentucky state champion with 25 years of experience in the sport.
John Wortley is a 5th degree black belt in Kodokan Judo and a 4th degree black belt in traditional jiu-jitsu. He is a 14-time Kentucky State Judo Champion, AAU National Champion, and two-time USA Judo Masters Medalist. He has been coaching judo, grappling, and wrestling since 1988 and currently teaches Core’s Judo classes.
Meghan Herp is a black belt in Krav Maga, which she has been training in for more than 10 years. She has also trained in Muay Thai and boxing at Core. Meghan received a bachelor’s degree in exercise science and a master’s degree in exercise physiology with a minor in strength and conditioning (from the University of Louisville). She was formerly the Head Sports Performance Coach at HOOPS Acceleration Elite.
Meghan has been an instructor for 6 years and currently teaches Core’s CoreFit and Krav Maga (intermediate) classes.
Derek Storc received his bachelor’s degree (Bellarmine University) and master’s degree (Middle Tennessee State) in exercise science and has been a trainer for 6 years. He is a certified personal trainer through the National Council for Certified Personal Trainers; a certified sports performance coach coach through USA Weightlifting; and certified speed and agility coach through Athletes Acceleration. Derek has taught Health and Human Performance courses in a university setting and has worked with people of all ages and fitness levels during his career, including in his position as Director of Programming and Head Sports Performance Coach at Optimum Fitness.
Derek’s main passion is training athletes—and he’s worked with athletes at the professional, college, and high school level—but he also enjoys helping people of many diverse needs get in shape through personal training.
Nathan Haddad has been training martial arts for 13 years and has been teaching for 7 years. He is a purple belt in BJJ and a certified Krav Maga instructor. He teaches adult and kids’ Krav Maga classes, as well as kids BJJ.
Nathan has been a successful competitor in BJJ tournaments across the country, and his accomplishments include: 2009 North American Grappling Association Champion, 2013 IBJJF Chicago No-Gi International Champion, 2015 Kentucky State Wrestling State Finalist, 2015 Pan American Games Participant, 2016 American Grappling Challenge Middleweight Champion 2016, BJJ Chicago Open International Middleweight Champion (no gi).
Max Haddad is a certified Krav Maga instructor and has been training Jiu Jitsu since he was 8 years old (currently ranked a Purple Belt). Max has 14 years of grappling and martial arts experience. He teaches adult and kids’ Krav Maga classes at Core. Check out his tutorials on getting off the ground safely and the scissor sweep.
Derek Disponette has been in martial arts since he was a kid. He has been training in Muay Thai for 13 years and teaching the sport for 2.5 years.
Derek has trained with top-level fighters such as Chris Lytle, Alan Belcher, and Brent Weedman, and he fought for several years as an amateur. Injuries have prevented Derek from competing further, so he now dedicates his time to studying and teaching Muay Thai. He has trained one fighter who won a national championship and another who placed second and third in national and world tournaments.
Derek’s love for Muay Thai continues to grow, and he seeks to deepen his understanding of the sport by traveling around the country and world to learn from and train with the best fighters and coaches he can find.
Terri Blair, who has been training martial arts since she was 8, is a 3-time former boxing World Champion and Judo State Champion (2000), who has fought MMA on Showtime and ESPN. Terri formerly taught boxing classes at Core and now works for the Louisville Metro Police Department. She can still be found participating in our CoreFit classes.
